I want to die. I really do. It’s genuinely the worst possible thing it could be.

...a base model Nissan Altima with CVT.

*just so nobody is asking me “what about the Nissan?” In a few months of I'm still posting about my caddy, nothing is set in stone yet, this is simply what is probably gonna happen, not what has.

I have a reliable car now. It’s had one issue in the year that I’ve owned it that has left it unusable, and it’s honestly not an expensive issue. My stepdad is just so anti-old car that whenever one breaks he’s instantly looking at any new car he can find just to get the old one out of his driveway.

But 2004 isn’t that old...

Honestly, I read through your last post, and I have to say a lease where you pick up the last two thirds is a terrible, terrible idea. I agree with some of the other comments. Make the case that you already own the Cadillac outright and the fix for it isn’t that expensive. Maybe convince your mom to pay to fix it if you promise to pay her back by the time you graduate. I don’t know if you have a job right now or not, but if you don’t, you should get one. If you really want to keep your Cadillac, you have to fight for it.

Bro, that isn’t even the worst Nissan it could be. It could be a Versa Note, or an NV200 (FUCK THE GODDAMN NV200).

Kinja'd!!! RallyWrench > Your boy, BJR

It sounds like the Caddy may just need an axle, which might not cost much more than a lease payment to fix. Seems a bit rash to chuck the car over that, so it should at least get looked at. I mean, it’s generous to offer a new car, but it seems unnecessary at this point. If the Caddy grenades the transmission or something, it’d be a different story.

I don’t understand the part where you have to agree to this. Even if your parents are helping you in other ways financially, that does not entitle them to force you to make other financial decisions you don’t agree with — Wow I’m surprised reading my own post here. Anyway, sticky situation for all.

If you live in a warmer state - get a scooter. It is FAR more fun than a CVT altima. Still an automatic but it’ll get crazy gas mileage. And again - infinitely more fun to not have doors

I am, but I'm not risking starting a blowup fight over a goddamn car. I've been allowed back in this house despite the horrible selfish shit i did back in my using days, and I'm not gonna break that trust or make them feel like I'm anything other than eternally greatful for what they've done for me.

If it’s gotta be a Nissan: Ask for a Versa Note if you have those in the USA. It’s a good-looking little car, has hatchback cred, and isn’t a base model Altima.

Kinja'd!!!

Look! It’s even good for your health because you can transport a bicycle in it.

Kinja'd!!! Bytemite > fhrblig

No. The Altima is worse than any Versa. At least the Versa would be light.

I haven’t been following the whole saga, but have you taken the time to run the numbers?

Miles travelled monthly, fuel cost, insurance and reg, estimated regular maintenance, etc. Compare to new car, making sure lease terms allow for estimated mileage.

If the current car is cheaper, ask to keep it. If the parents push, make a compromise: keep the Caddy until it breaks for more than the cost of 3 months of payments (or some such).

And I suspect you’ve already brought this up, but forcing someone to pay for something they don’t want and perhaps cannot afford isn’t a gift. It’s a ball and chain. Are they willing to bail you out if trouble arises?

Shit wouldn’t that be cheaper than paying a lease and higher insurance for the next 2 years? Put a lease payment’s worth in a savings account for car repairs and you'll come out ahead.

Where in Jersey are you located? And what's the potential lease on an Altima anyway? I know you mentioned below you are grateful for even being under the roof right now, but wouldn't/shouldn't you at least have some say since you'll be having to pay for (and drive) this car?

Well, I know you can lease a Civic right now for $179 month, 2k down. I can only imagine a Fit would be even cheaper. And Honda’s CVTs are worlds better than Nissan’s. I wouldn’t wish a Nissan CVT on my worst enemy (former cube owner).

I'm still trying to figure out why they're stuck on an Altima. That lease doesn't seem all that incredible to me.

Kinja'd!!! Your boy, BJR > Stapleface

Because it has some sort of zero down program on it or something.

Kinja'd!!! Stapleface > Your boy, BJR

Hmmm, in that case I can kind of see the allure for them.

0 down is hard to beat, provided it's a true zero down and no stupid hidden fees. I'll see what else I can come up with at those parameters.
